Why Your Computer Needs a Solid State Drive
Solid state drives, otherwise known as SSDs, are computer components that store data. They differ from the traditional means of permanent data storage—namely hard disk drives (HDD)—in that they use NAND flash memory chips, which save computer data in electrical circuits. Unlike short-term RAM, which does not retain its data when there is no longer any electricity actively running through it, NAND keeps its contents using a metal-oxide semiconductor that gives a charge to its memory cell. Of the SSD types out there, NVMe M.2 SSDs tend to have the highest specs (NVMe denotes connection type, while M.2 references the form factor of the design).
In contrast, hard disk drives rely on the movement of an actuator arm, which touches the hard drive at different points as it spins. This process changes the polarity of the magnetic components in the hard drive, storing data that stays even without electrical power.
Now that you know what SSDs are and how they differ from HDDs, an important question remains. Why does your computer need a solid state drive? Well, you can expect to see the following benefits if you use one.
Speed
SSDs are significantly faster than HDDs because you do not need to wait while the actuator arm locates data in the drive. Rather, it can be directly loaded from circuits. Additionally, storage devices may split up data into fragments scattered around the disk/circuits to fit it on the drive. When a memory drive is more full of data, fragmentation occurs more and more frequently. Upon initiating data retrieval, you must wait longer with an HDD because those fragments must all be found and brought back together by the actuator arm as the disk spins. SSDs can access data in about the same time no matter where it is stored inside, so this isn’t a substantial problem with them.
M.2 SSDs, in particular, can reach speeds surpassing that of average interface types, such as SATA SSDs. They are able to do this using non-volatile memory express (NVMe) buses, which connect them with the rest of the computer. NVMes provide read and write speeds several times faster than SATA connections are able to by connecting right on the motherboard through PCIe slots as opposed to using cables.
Reliability
Another reason why your computer needs a solid state drive is that it can improve reliability. Since SSDs don’t need moving mechanical parts to operate as HDDs do, they are less prone to malfunctioning. M.2 SSDs can have higher dependability because they are generally more compact than other SSDs, meaning that there is less area to sustain damage. Whether through extended usage and the wear that comes with time, or some form of physical jostling, an SSD will be better able to weather whatever comes its way. Many people prefer this sturdiness since it reduces the instance of unexpected failure.
Power Needs
SSD also use less electrical power when compared to HDDs. They do not need to spin in order to become readable, instead working more immediately. In the interim period where you wait for a HDD to start up, your computer is using power that could be saved with an SSD. If you use your computer often, you could wind up consuming a significantly larger amount of electricity with an HDD as a result. Again, M.2 SSD form factors are among the best in this aspect as well, because they need even less energy than other SSDs.
