Understanding How Solid-State Drives Work

When you want to build a gaming PC or upgrade your current computer, solid-state drives (SSDs) inevitably come up in the conversation as a smart component to invest in. They store the data you need to save and reaccess later. SSDs are also able to retrieve that data quite fast, which can help your computer’s performance. What goes into making an SSD function, though? Let’s go over their inner workings so you can have a better understanding of how solid-state drives work.

NAND

At the core of SSD functioning is NAND flash memory, which is a nonvolatile form of memory that retains data even after the computer’s power is turned off, unlike RAM. NAND makes use of arrangements of transistors, called cells, that are organized in a grid and connected with wires in a series in a circuit. Each cell has two transistors: the control gate and the floating gate. The current can run through the cell and cause electrons to transfer from the control to the floating gate and create an overall positive charge in that cell. When this happens, the current no longer flows through that cell, and it is recognized by the NAND system as a 0. In contrast, a cell that is unchanged from its default form is read as a 1. The combinations of zeros and ones are how NAND stores data.

Reading and Writing

What is also important to note in NAND nomenclature is that each row on the overall cell grid is called a page, while the grid itself is called a block. There are multitudes of blocks within one SSD.

When an SSD reads the data held within it, it does so by looking through its pages of cells. When it erases data, it can only delete entire blocks because of the large voltage necessary to begin and carry out the erasure. If you want to update an existing file held within a page, the SSD must first delete the whole block it exists within, then rewrite the block with the change.

This means that an emptier SSD can read and write faster, while one that already has much of its space filled will slow down. Additionally, some of the charge transferred into the floating gate remains even when data is erased, and eventually the SSD cannot change the cell to a 0 any longer. At that point, that part of the SSD becomes read-only.

Advantages

With this decaying limitation, you may question why people choose to use SSDs over or in combination with the other type of data drive, hard-disk drives (HDDs). The foremost reason is that they access their data much faster than HDDs. HDDs take longer to gather data when it is fragmented in different locations on their disks, but SSDs can retrieve data quickly no matter where it is stored on them. You can see the difference an SSD makes in various key aspects of your PC’s performance. This includes the initiation of software and reading and writing of data. When a video game requires the loading of big files, the SSD helps it to run smoothly.

Another reason people choose SSDs is that they don’t have moving parts. Your computer stays quieter and is less prone to heating up as you have it perform tasks, as the SSD does not take up as much power as a moving HDD. Moreover, an SSD is more reliable than an HDD, which may cease working altogether if any of its moving pieces is physically damaged or malfunctions.
