Ways To Increase Your SSD’s Lifespan

Since your computer cannot continue to function without its storage devices, it’s best to avoid a situation where an unexpected storage failure might occur. With many people utilizing SSDs for their non-volatile memory needs, it is becoming increasingly relevant to know of ways to increase your SSD’s lifespan. You can avoid certain activities on your computer in order to extend the length of time you use your SSDs, which we share in this post.

Don’t Put Your Computer in Hibernation

Hibernation is a feature that allows you to shut down your computer and then quickly reopen whatever you were working on or using before upon returning to it. The issue with this is that your computer writes all the data that it stores for retrieval on your memory drive during hibernation. Hibernating your computer often can end up occupying a large portion of your SSD’s space with that data each time. This excessive writing can wear out your SSD prematurely, so you should avoid hibernating and turn off any auto-hibernate option that your computer may currently have active.

Don’t Perform Defragmentation

Defragmentation is necessary on HDDs because of the way that they store and read data on a spinning disk. Contiguous pieces of information may end up separated on the disk, making it harder for them to find the specific information you are requesting. Defragmentation alleviates this. For an SSD, however, the location of data doesn’t slow down functioning. Thus, it does not need defragmentation. You would simply put unnecessary strain on your SSD by carrying this process out.

Don’t Fill Its Storage Capacity

As your SSD’s storage becomes increasingly occupied, it becomes more difficult for it to read and write data since it must spend more time finding free space to work with. Because of this, a way to increase your SSD’s lifespan it to refrain from saving data onto your SSD until it is completely filled. A good rule of thumb to follow is to treat about seventy-five percent of your SSD’s capacity as its maximum so that you don’t see a significant decrease in performance. When you reach that point, you can add more storage drives to continue storing more data.
