METAVERSE AND GAMING
The metaverse is a virtual world in which users can engage in real-life experiences through a virtual presence. Although Meta’s metaverse has received the most attention lately, several developers from games such as Fortnite, Roblox, and Minecraft are working toward the metaverse concept.
Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, formerly called Facebook, has been investing in virtual reality (VR) for over a decade. His brand Oculus is among the most successful VR gadgets on the market. He recently stated he has about 20% of his company working on this new project.
Zuckerberg states that his new Metaverse project, Meta, will include social media, live events, commerce, crypto, gaming, and endless possibilities for creativity. Like the real world, people will be able to participate in various activities. Each person will have a presence through a customizable avatar.
In Zuckerberg’s most recent Meta campaign video, he shares how Meta will change the way games are played. From ping pong on a virtual ping pong table in a virtual apartment to chess with someone from a different country at a virtual replica of New York Central Park. Mark Zuckerberg emphasizes Meta’s efforts to create a presence and feel truly connected in the Metaverse.
The platform follows the structure along the lines of Epic Gaming’s Fortnite but at a grander level. Fortnite and other virtual worlds can function with a capacity of about 100 to 200 live players. In the metaverse, everyone will be able to participate without a capacity limit.
Games like Fortnite, Roblox, and Minecraft capture a small glimpse of what the Metaverse will be. Fortnite occasionally has live events that include social events that we have in the real world like concerts. The creator of Fortnite, Epic’s Tim Sweeney, states that Epic envisions to create a Metaverse that can seamlessly combine shared environments between games with content portability. This means that you would be able to pick up your favorite weapon from Fortnite and take it to Minecraft and expect it to function as it would on Fortnite.
The challenge that comes with making this possible is content portability. Developers must discover a way to have one game recognize any bought skin, character, artifact, etc. and function properly across the whole platform as opposed to only working or functioning in one lobby or separate game.
Tim Sweeney stated that Facebook, now Meta, and Apple have reached out to help in building the Metaverse but he is concerned with their privacy legislature. Sweeney wants the Metaverse to be free in cost like the internet and ultimately free of security issues such as selling of identity information. New interest has sparked after Sweeney’s thoughts whether Sweeney will be the safer Metaverse option.
Despite current challenges, the metaverse will soon become a part of our daily lives. Key players already have virtual universes of their own, and we stand anxiously awaiting to see how they will merge to form one ubiquitous metaverse.
