Does my M.2 NVMe SSD Need a Heatsink?
Do you really need an M.2 heatsink? Absolutely yes.
A heat sink is a device meant to steer heat away from important components in your PC. A heat sink will help reduce about 20 to 30°C in temperature on average. Although the main concern is loss of performance as the direct consequence of over heating, there is data that elevates a concern for the lifetime of SSDs. Most recommendations strive to keep the drive under 70 degrees celsius as the thermal ceiling temperature.
BuildOrBuy recently made a review video on our Digifast M.2 2280 SSD Premium Heatsink. The heatsink was demonstrated as a great aluminum heatsink for an affordable price.
Gill Boyd, the host of this review video, performs an unboxing, inspection and installation. Upon unboxing, Boyd reveals that the packaging includes spare parts, a magnetic screwdriver and thermal pads. During inspection, he enjoyed the durable feel of the thermal pads and the design and weight of the Heatsink. Once the heatsink was ready to go, he continued to run tests for performance and temperature.
Boyd performed two tests: one where the M.2 and heatsink assembly was connected to an AIC M.2 adapter and other where it was connected directly to the motherboard. Boyd was impressed with the results. He revealed a 56°C temperature when connected to the AIC and 62°C when on the motherboard directly. He repeatedly commented on how impressive the results were compared to his chart of past tests. He mentioned this is a top performer and emphasized that the temperature is of high quality results for an aluminum M.2 heatsink. To end his review, he expressed that the assembly of the heatsink was enjoyably easy and straightforward.
The Digifast M.2 SSD Premium Heatsink is designed for high standards. The 70x22.8x20.5mm device is assembled with a high-quality heatsink top, thermal pad, M.2 2280 SSD and heatsink bottom.
